But, who was this mysterious saint and how did these traditions develop? We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance and St. Valentine's Day as it is today contains traces of Christian and pagan traditions of ancient Rome. The Catholic Church recognizes three different saints named Valentinus or Valentine and many people believe Valentine's Day commemorates the martyrdom of one, or all three of these saints. However it is more likely that the church, in order to "christianize" the pagan celebration of "Lupercalia," a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture celebrated on February 15 (in the middle of barren winter) created St. Valentine's Day.
