Due to its diverse cultural makeup, it wasn't until 1811 when the first English school was established on a boat yard at the Tensaw River by John Pierce, of New England, followed in 1812 with three schools, St. Stephens Academy, Green Academy, and Washington Academy at Huntsville. Of these, Green Academy survived the longest but was burnt down by Union troops during the Civil War. After they were restored, they were incorporated into Huntsville public school system. Today there are about 7,000 plus teachers in Alabama, and over 800,000 students in Alabama public schools.
